There are many studies on early literacy in children. Some advocate that children as young as 2 can learn to read, while others state that reading is a process that is established later in child development. Regardless of the study, all agree that setting up good reading habits early sets the stage for a lifelong commitment to reading.
Children mimic the actions of the older people most present in their lives. Therefore, it is important for children to see those around them reading. In addition, reading to children of any age also increases the likelihood that children will read more as adults.
Current common core standards call for not only comprehension of fictionalized texts but also of biographies and real life events. Reading several types of developmentally appropriate texts helps broaden your child’s reading skills and increases their empathy.
